Q: What Did the Artist Say to the Dentist?

A: Matisse hurt!

Get it?  Matisse hurt!  Ma - tisse hurt.  My teeth hurt...Well, I never claimed to be a comedian.  Regardless, I wanted to let you know some new fabric has hit the floor of the shop.  And it's wicked cool.  It's by Alexander Henry, and here's a peak:

New Fabric from Alexander Henry and Moda!

No pithy prose from me today Ladies and Gentlemen - I'm going to let the fabric speak for itself!

Maison De Garance

According to Moda (which, as everyone knows, is my favorite), "Maison de Garance - the House of Garance - was one of the only dye houses in France to cultivate all of the shades of the garance flower - from deep red to chocolate brown."  Accordingly, the next installment of the French General series is colored with deep reds, brown, and beige florals.  It's beautiful, as if anything called "Maison de Garance" could be anything but.  The line is expected to arrive at Sew Inspired in the next few days - if you are our UPS man, consider this fair warning: 21 bolts of to-die-for fabric is on its way!

You can find a free pattern using Maison de Garance Jelly Rolls and sashing here.

Dr. Seuss now in Simsbury!

How many of you would consider eating green eggs and ham?  Or think a Grinch could save Christmas?  Or ever listened to the wind hoping to hear a Who?  Well, if you have, have I got some good news for you!  Our much anticipated Dr. Seuss fabric arrived today and we couldn't be happier.  It wonderful - bright, cheerful, and full of our favorite characters.  Here, take a look.

Alternative Fabrics

As a product of 80's and 90's music, I'm a big fan of alternative rock (R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Nirvana).  Now, we have alternative fabric in the shop and I couldn't be happier.  Not one's to blend into the background, these pieces beg to be used in an alternative way.  No burying these guys in a quilt, they beg to be made into garments - fun kids clothes, pajama bottoms, shirts, and linings of jackets.

Not Every Child is a Princess...

...Some are the play-in-the-dirt, dig-a-hole-in-the-ground, tear-their-pants-at-the-knee kind of kid.  And have we got the fabric for you!  Check this out, the most wonderful tonka-esque fabric I believe we've ever had at the shop.  Kathy, one of my co-workers who also happens to have two of the "dirt under the fingernails" type of grandsons, is already thinking of ways to use this fabric.  What will you dream up?

Calling All Witches and Warlocks!

I'm sure you can agree that it's never too early to start thinking about fall: crisp night, crunchy leaves underfoot, and HALLOWEEN!  (All of these are especially inviting because as I write this it is approximately 94 degrees outside and, well, let's just say it's not a dry heat!)

All of our Halloween fabric is in, so I thought I'd take a few minutes and post some samples of all the awesomely, spookily fun fabric we have!

Nancy Halvorsen has Landed!

I know - it's crazy right?  It's barely May and we're getting Christmas fabric in already!  But believe you me, it's true.  The entire Nancy Halvorsen 2010 Christmas line "Good Tiding of Great Joy" was delivered to the shop late last week, and it's as wonderful as we could have hoped it would be.  Here, take a look for yourself:

Oh Baby!

We have a growing selection of baby and juvenile fabrics and new kits for new arrivals.  Come check out the cutest kids' fabric in the land!

First up in the batting order is "Simple Pleasures" by Henry Glass.  This line has sweet pastel greens, blues, and yellows, and comes with a panel and coordinating fabrics.  We don't have kits cut for this yet (we will though, so be patient!), but we do have all the fabrics for the pattern, available here

Batting second is "High, Low, Fast, Slow". which is my favorite.  This is an "opposites attract" kind of quilt, with high and low making friends with clean and dirty along with full and empty.  Kits are cut and available.

And, to continue the baseball theme (sorry folks - baseball season is well under way), batting clean up is "Special Delivery" by Andover.  Now, I may be dating myself here, but this fabric brings back memories of the mad rush my mother was forced to make when my older sister INSISTED that she get a Cabbage Patch Kid for Christmas one year.  The line is very sweet a stork delivery newborn babies.  This panel would be even more special if there was a set of twins coming into the world.  Kits are being cut soon, but if you can't wait, the pattern is available here.

Martinique by Three Sisters for Moda

Look everyone, it's almost time for a new Block-of-the-Month program!  This is a perfect program for all you floral enthusiasts out there.  The fabric is the new Martinique line by Three Sisters for Moda, and the pattern is Vintage Memories, a wonderful sampler with blocks set on point and a sweet larger center block.  See below for samples of the fabric we'll be using!

Space for this program is limited, so make sure to stop into the shop and sign up!  The first month's fabric and pattern will be ready in a few weeks.

Newton Strikes Again!!

Look out folks - Newton, the cuddliest sheep on the block has struck again!  We just got in the new Newton line, and it's as cute at the original line.  'Cause let's face it folks - how could a sheep holding a flashlight, refusing to go to bed be anything BUT cute?

New Moda Groups!!!

Now, I have to admit.  I'm a Moda girl.  When I see a line of fabric come in with that wonderful Moda logo on the bolts, I'm a happy camper.  In fact, I have a Moda decal on my car (I know, kinda lame, right?).  I'm only telling you this so you can properly imagine how happy I'm going to be over the next few weeks when three new Moda lines come in.  Here's some pictures of two; look for more details on the third coming soon:

Nancy Halvorsen's "Garden Song"

You all know Nancy Halvorsen.  She's the one who comes out with the sweetest holiday fabrics around.  Well, just last week, for the first time in Sew Inspired history, we received her spring line of fabrics.  And let me tell you, dear readers, that it's every bit as sweet as her holiday lines.  We have the entire line here at the shop, and her book is coming out by the end of the month, so make sure to stop by to get a good taste of spring.  Here's what you can look forward to:

Land of a Thousand Fabrics

Well, more than a thousand, but you get the idea.  And, since we all know that a picture is worth a thousand words, how about several thousand words worth of pictures?  Because there is no better way to show you all the wonderful fabric that is going to be arriving at the shop in the next few weeks.  So let's get rolling!

"Illuminating Spring" from Wilmington.

"Chasing Rainbows" by Kaufman

"Dancing Horses" by Laurel Birch for Clothworks

"Nana's Garden" by Red Rooster

"Peonies" by South Seas

In addition to these wonderful fabrics, we are getting in a few novelty lines that are part of the One Million Pillowcase Challenge.  You can read about the challenge here.

As always wonderful quilters, we getting new fabrics in almost everyday, so be sure to swing by and check things out!

Polka-Dotted Hippos? That's Preposterous!

Since the holidays are the most fun when one is either a child, or keeps their child-like wonder, we thought it would be fun to high-light some of the new novelty fabric we've gotten in the shop the past few weeks.  And there have been some great peices coming off the delivery trucks.  I think my personal favorite is "Baby Safari" by Benartex.  I have two words (okay, technically three I guess) for you: polka-dotted hippopotamuses.  I think that about sums it up!

Apparently animals were in the water when Viv and Heidi last ordered fabric, as we also got in "Untamed Melody," a line of fabric from Wilmington, which brings us back to the Big Band days, but instead of Benny Goodman playing clarinet we have cats on drums, deer on french horn, and zebras playing the cymbals.  I have four words for you this time: how cool is that?

Of course, if your sewing is bent a little more toward the 18 and over crowd, we haven't forgotten you.  We have two new Asian lines, one with pearl and blue, the other with greens and golds.  Along with those we have a few additions to "Funky Town": lime green, white and black line called "Belle Flor", new Kaffe Fassett fat quarter bundles and several new Kaffe fabrics on the bolt.

Whew!  I'm tired just typing this all out.  You know what?  I think you should just come down to the shop and see it all for yourself.  Yup - I think that would be an excellant idea!

Oil Cloth? What's an Oil Cloth?

oil cloth 2Yeah, I asked pretty much the same question when our very nice UPS man delivered two rolls of very pretty, but very unusual fabric to Sew Inspired a few days ago.  The answer?  It was oil cloth!

Oil cloth has been around for EVER.  Well, maybe not since forever, but at least for a very long time.  But, it's recently coming back into vogue.  My question was then, after inspecting it, how it ever went OUT of vogue.  Let me explain.  Oil cloth is regular woven cotton quilting fabric that is coated with polyurethane, which makes the fabric waterproof and wipeable.  So really, what's not to love?  Off the top of my head, I can think of at least nine things that this would be good for.  Let's count them off shall we?

  1. Market bags
  2. Cosmetic bags
  3. Splat mats for under children's high-chairs
  4. Splat mats for under dog/cat dishes
  5. Splat mats for under teenage boy's dishes (okay, splat mats for under anything really!)
  6. Travel changing pads for diaper bags
  7. Baby bibs
  8. Tablecloths
  9. Book covers

The fabric is quite easy to work with, but here are a few tips, just in case:

  • Do NOT put a hot iron directly onto the oiled side of the oil cloth.  It WILL melt the polyurethane.  Instead, put the cloth oiled side down, cover with a pressing cloth, and press with a hot, dry iron.
  • Pins will leave small holes in the fabric, so pin inside of seam allowances whenever possible.
  • Use a walking foot when sewing to keep the two layers of fabric from shifting
  • Lenghten your stitch length to minimize the number of needle pricks in the fabric.
  • Best of all, in my opinion, is that oil cloth WILL NOT FRAY - so if you want a really quick, casual tablecloth, just cut the fabric to size and throw it on the table.  Easy peasy lemon squeezey.

oil cloth 1

We have two rolls of oilcloth in the shop, and we're so excited we can barely contain ourselves.  We should have some sample projects made with it in the next few days, so please stop by and check it out.  Then you can be back in vogue along with us!

The Quilts of Gee's Bend

Lazy Gal VariationHave you heard of Gee's Bend?  Gee's Bend is a town in central Alabama where quilting must run in the water.  Women there have been producing distinctive quilts for over six generations.  The quilts are a mix of sophisticated color mastery and imaginitive yet simple geometric foundations which, since the town's "discovery" by the outside world, have been on display in major art museums around the country, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.

Windham Fabrics has now partnered with the Gee's Bend Quilter's Collective and brought their fantastic patterns and fabrics to the greater quilting community.  We here at Sew Inspired fell in love with Gee's Bend and have kits and fabric available for you.  The kits have fabric for the complete quilt top and binding and use the same hand dyed fabric that is available on the bolt.  We carry all four available kits and over 15 bolts of fabric so you can create your own Gee's Bend original masterpiece.

You can find more information on the wonderful women of Gee's bend by visiting the Collective's official website here.

Pretty, Pretty Penguin

penguins.jpgThe Next Duck, Duck Goose!

Remember that cute fabric line? Well here's the follow-up. Need we say more? Move over Hungry Caterpillar... Oh, speaking of the caterpillar, we have a huge shipment due shortly and a wait list of folks who are making the Fons & Porter featured quilt or the quilt Andover designed. Not on the list? Call us. Then, we'll call you the day it arrives. As far as the Penguin goes, we're told he's "on the water" which means the fabric is on the boat so it's 6-8 weeks away. Trust us, it's worth the wait.

More Tonga Dimes

newdimes.jpg Salt Water Taffy

This is the new quilt kit for the second group of Tonga batiks from Timeless Tresures. Our first group, which made the Jungle Fever kit, was such a hit and we liked this collection just as much. Debbie won the "sample lottery" with this quilt and she's begun stitching with our pre-shipped sample kit from Timeless. These are 30 of the almost 100 batiks we have coming in the next few months. We do love our batiks!

More Batiks!

tongagreens.gif Central Park

You've seen the ads for the new, green Tonga batiks from Timeless Treasures. And soon you'll be able to see the fabric (and quilt!) at Sew Inspired. This group is one of several new batik collections due in the shop in late June. Deb R. has graciously agreed to make this sample - you know how much she loves curved piecing and this quilt is right up her alley!

Chasing Rainbows

chasingrainbow.jpgNew Fabric from Sherrill Kahn

These pieces exemplify Sherrill Kahn's signature painterly style in bright, bold color combinations. The prints are based on Sherrill's original artwork, and include lustrous metallic overlay for even greater texture and dimension. Make stunning quilt designs, wearable art, or quilted sculptures.

Hungry Caterpillar Arrives!

vhc1.jpg The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar fabric arrived this week - yet another sign of spring at Sew Inspired! Eric Carle's storybooks were favorites with my children... and I have always loved the bold collage of colors he used to illustrate. We have the entire collection so you, too, can reminisce while you quilt!

New Australian Fabrics Arrive!

Aboriginal Art on Fabric!

"Spectacular views and various creatures such can be observed in the Yalke or Wetlands of Australia both in the dry or wet seasons. These are illustrated by June Smith in her new painting, “Yalke”. During the dry season vast water masses revert back to wetlands and waterholes; becoming refuge for waterfowls and many other migratory birds of Australia.

June Smith is known for very neat and well defined composition. She spends most of her time with Karangka Arts which is a well established contemporary Aboriginal artists group in Santa Teressa, Northern Territory."

Nobu Fujiyama Arrives!

Limited Edition Collection

The first group of this new collection from Kona Bay has arrived! These pieces are limited edition art on fabric - stunning Geishas with several coordinates.

Rain Blossom

This new group from Windham is c.1915 with an Asian flair... in warm peaches, greens and browns.

New Anna Griffin Arrivals

blythe.jpgIt's been another busy week for the UPS folks!

The Blythe group celebrates creativity... Create stunning collages by combining prints of old world maps, pen and ink calligraphy and found French elements. Shown here is the antique bouquet of wild roses on a distressed background.

Anna Griffin's Maime pieces offer tropical, 1950s Floridian flare! And, Charlotte is simply elegant and reminiscent of an English garden with its beautiful climbing roses.

A Quilter's Palette...

paintbox3.jpgThink of Lonni Rossi's new series as a palette...

... colors and textures designed to mix and blend with other fabrics (though we think they'd look spectacular together and can't wait to see Deb R's bargello color wheel!). My daughter has recently taken up painting with acrylics and part of the thrill is caressing the tubes and squeezing out bits of each color and mixing them together - something we quilters can relate to!

These collector boxes of the bright palette are available now and the mid tones and pastels will be coming later this spring.

Hoppy Spring?

bunny.jpg

Well, not quite. The recent snow made spring seem even further away. But, Easter really is right around the corner. And, these adorable Hoppy Spring fabrics from Clothworks are funnier than last year's Dipped Chicks. Even cuter still is our little Yo-Yo bunny, happily perched by these fabrics waiting for spring. Haven't joined the yo-yo craze? This may well be the project that changes that... just ask Heidi!

Back to Basics

10531_asst.jpgNew Neutrals from Michael Miller!

After receiving so many bright and colorful fabrics over the last few weeks, the arrival of the new basic group from Michael Miller was a little strange... these 20 fabrics range from white to cream to latte. Yum. So what can you do with all those basics? We like the quilts in Alex Anderson's Neutral Essentials. Michael Miller also has a few projects on their website. Check out the latte log cabin. Yum again. (Can you tell I like coffee?)

Dargate Lavender and Mint, c. 1830

dargate1.jpgNew Reproduction Fabrics Begin Arriving!

One of our core strategies in 2008 is to build and maintain a bigger department of reproduction fabrics. At International Quilt Market, we began by ordering 50 bolts from Windham's various collections due out between now and Spring - including Williamsburg and the Mark Twain collection due in March. Today's delivery included 13 bolts of Dargate Lavender & Mint, c. 1830. Margo Krager has designed this beautiful reproduction collection in a palette that maintains the integrity of both pattern and color of the original designs first printed 175 years ago.
